The Clothesline Project June 2021
On June 26th, The NAACP Brockton Area Branch and FCR held a domestic violence awareness event at City Hall in Brockton. “The Clothesline Project” began in Hyannis in 1990 when a member of the Cape Cod's Women's Defense Agenda learned that during the same time 58,000 soldiers were killed in the Vietnam War, 51,000 U.S. women were killed by the men who claimed to love them.
Over this last year, domestic violence was spoken about more often than ever due to the pandemic and the risks to victims being trapped in homes with their abusers.
Did you know that:
20 people per minute are physically abused by an intimate partner in the United States. In one year alone, more than 10 million women and men are abused.
1 in 4 women and 1 in 9 men experience severe intimate partner physical violence, intimate partner contact sexual violence, and stalking.
It doesn’t stop there, 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men have experienced some form of physical violence by an intimate partner. This includes a range of behaviors like slapping, grooming and shoving.
“That doesn’t stop there either. Women and men are facing emotional and mental abuse. Abuse goes beyond physical and we must remember that. That is why today, we bring awareness to domestic violence and speak out against it with this clothesline project. Let’s love our neighbors and instead of standing by and watching, let’s show compassion to those who are silently and vocally asking for help,” says Courtney Henderson, chair of the Women in NAACP Committee, organizer of the event.
Phyllis Ellis, President NAACP Brockton Area Branch stated, “Domestic violence is everywhere. There are tens of millions of cases of domestic violence each year and 30,000 deaths. Domestic violence is a silent killer -people don’t want to talk about it. The Clothesline project displaying the types of violence through the different colored tee shirts lends voice.”
